ARTIST: CROMWELL NGOBENI

Cromwell Ngobeni is a South African visual artist known for his pursuit of monochromatic charcoal and pastel drawings. He began drawing at the young age of eight, inspired by his older brother’s sketches. In 2013, he trained and qualified for three years at the Artist Proof studio in Johannesburg as a print maker and subsequently interned as a gallery assistant. Cromwell is self taught and working as a print maker afforded him the right foundation as he was exposed to artists such as, Philemon Hlungwani, and William Kentridge, while searching for his own artistic voice.
In 2015, he participated in the Mandela Day Portraits project which took place in Newtown, Johannesburg and was commissioned to work on the mural painting for Family court in Johannesburg. In 2018, he was a Brainstorm calendar award winner and he received the Thami Mnyele top 100 award. In 2021, Cromwell opened his own studio based in Kramerville, Johannesburg and which is set to give not only him, but other artists the opportunity to showcase their work. It is there where he had his first solo exhibition in October, 2021.
