ABOUT THE WORK

These works were originally created as part of a body of work that was exhibited at Whatiftheworld gallery. They are part of an on going investigation into notions of vision and perception. How we perceive the world through our own filters (apperception). As a result of astigmatism I noticed a double vision in only one eye, also know as “ghosting". This symptom took me to an ophthalmologist but it also began the enquiry into vision and perception. From a spiritual point of view, it is believed that damaged eyesight is s result of something one does not want to see. I began noting everything I didn’t want to see. On a very personal level, there were certain things within some of my relationships that I was ignoring. At that time I was feeling particularly sensitive to the crime and all the abuse that were happening in South Africa. Particularly, 'The Sun' news boards that you see while driving. I began collecting these papers and cutting into them to almost deconstruct the newspaper articles. On the flip side I noted all the things I Did want to look at and that is when I discovered Google sky. I was blown away by what I saw. One could just search the vast expanse zooming in and out and searching any part of the universe. This space became a place of Utopia. Where anything could exist where anything was possible. In the inly blackness time was still, peaceful and nothing here on earth seemed to matter. The bigger picture was a place I could escape to.

As part of this investigation I started representing the micro and macrocosm. Looking deep into the universe and then deeper into that what makes up the universe. Dark matter, Gravitational lensing, platonic solids all inspired drawing that became cut outs. In some of the works the black areas are some of the platonic solid shapes that have been folded out as if they were three dimensional paper origami. Almost suggesting a holographic universe that behind everything that appears three-dimensional is a realm of planes that exist but that which we cannot see or even fathom.

I also looked at the earth and noted that which I did not want to see or rather that which saddened me. I looked at images of the polar ice caps before and present pictures of how they are disintegrating. I was particularly interested in the 'Eyes on Darfur' amnesty program that looks at villages that have been in genocide attacks and how the life has literally been burnt out after an attack. The before and after satellite images are arresting.

My process involved drawing with pencil then using Indian ink to paint onto the Zerkall paper. After which I will draw the image I want to cut and then laser cut the appropriate place on the paper. In doing so I create a three-dimensional effect of cut out on top of paper or drawing.
