Anton Smit is a contemporary South African sculptor, born on August 2, 1954. He is widely known for his large-scale sculptures and public art exhibitions. Smit began exhibiting his art in 1976 and gained early recognition by winning the South African Association of Arts' New Signatures competition in 1979. His international presence was established in 1991 with exhibitions in Rome and Milan, followed by shows in Singapore and New York. Smit's work was also featured at the inauguration of President Nelson Mandela in 1994. His sculptures are displayed in various locations worldwide, including libraries, wine estates, corporate offices, and local spots like Menlyn Maine Shopping Centre. Anton Rupert acquired one of Smit’s works for the Rembrandt Foundation, and Desmond Tutu and Pik Botha have purchased his sculptures.
