Title: Behind The Mask

Description:

This Japanese inspired artwork makes use of various Japanese mythologies and beliefs to bring note towards Covid. A samurai in the background wearing a traditional Men-Yoroi mask slashes - in half - a Kitsune mask in the foreground seen on either corner of the piece. The Kitsune mask represents shapeshifters in Japanese culture, this allures towards the idea of how people, during Covid, have taken on many forms to get through this pandemic, often some more monstrous. The Men-Yoroi represent warriors that bring justice. The samurai represents how I believe in one's being able to negate and fight against the horrible misdeeds people have caused during these trying times. My focal point of the piece is the Great Slash encompassing a broad diagonal of the work. It is constructed of flames and harsh winds representing both the idea of burning away the memories brought about the Kitsune mask but also the fiery will the samurai should have. The piece comes from a traditional wood carving on an A3 board, following being inked and pressed onto a larger A2 piece of paper for the final product.
