Artist statement:
This work reflects the intense feeling of being at a loss / astray / adrift as a result of the devastating impact of the pandemic, at the same time it is meant as a tribute to those who lost their lives.
About the artist:
Juria le Roux was born in Zimbabwe in 1963, where she spent her childhood on a cattle and maize farm near Rusape. She has lived in South Africa since 1976.
She obtained a B.A. Creative Arts Degree in Jewellery Design and Manufacture at the University of Stellenbosch in 1986. She founded Amulet, a co-operative workshop with three members, in Cape Town, in 1987.
Juria has held and taken part in solo and group jewellery and painting exhibitions since 1986.
Her solo exhibition ‘Elegie’ / ‘Reeksmoord’ (US Art Gallery, Stellenbosch 2011 and Absa KKNK, Oudtshoorn 2012) - 50 portraits of murder victims in South Africa, a work of tribute and protest, was met with widespread interest.
More recently she has made paintings utilising the symbolism of fire and water, investigating and commenting on the loss of heritage, land ownership, environmental issues and the transience of life.
