Artist statement:
Sand dune with rocks near Paternoster. Oil painting on canvas board. Frame is 2,5 cm wide x 3 cm deep. It is a square edge, flat profile, white wooden 'Canvas Float' frame.
About the artist:
I qualified as a Graphic Designer and worked in Advertising Agencies and Design Studios initially, before freelancing in Design and Illustration. I started painting professionally in the mid 90s and have continually exhibited in group exhibitions, commercial galleries and lately in online auctions and exhibitions.
The composition and detail in my work has been influenced by both my background in Graphic Design and my love of drawing. I enjoy exploring mark making and experimenting with texture, often applying thick impasto and fabric collage to my work, painting and drawing into and around it. I'm also fascinated by the interplay of light and shadow and its effect on colour. Oil is my favourite medium, but I also work with acrylic, charcoal and pastel, sometimes using various different media on one piece.
I've served on the Council of the SA Society of Artists and am a member of art.b, Watercolor Art SA as well as SASA. I've received awards from SASA, a commendation from WASA and have been a finalist in the Hermanus FynArts competition.
