The work is a collaboration between Christiaan Diedericks and Shui-Lyn White. We both worked on the same work in a way that it is nearly impossible to recognise the individual styles of both artists
About the artwork:
The themes of vanitas and memento mori or memento vivere deal with imagery as a visual reminder of the ephemerality of human existence. Typical imagery includes skulls, flowers, fruit and beautiful young women, suggesting mortality. Already in the 17th c. the themes became popular in a religious age when almost everyone believed that life on earth was merely a preparation for an afterlife. However, contemporary artists continue to explore this genre.

About the artists:
Vortex is a collaboration between Christiaan Diedericks and Shui-Lyn White - South African artists with differing artistic intentions, practices and backgrounds yet bound by a deep friendship and a belief in art as a means of service and transformation. Vortex began in conversations during the pandemic and lockdowns of 2020-21 as both artists mused on a way forward in the aftermath of Covid-19, in the face of climate change and environmental degradation, and in the societal overhaul necessary for wellbeing of humanity. What they both felt to be crucial for humankind was collaboration. And so, Vortex was born.
The official Vortex launch is scheduled for September 2022 at the Space Contemporary Art Gallery with Rossouw Modern in Hermanus, South Africa and curated by Jozua Rossouw, followed by an exhibition in India and other international venues.
