Alex Sibanda has created this abstract rhino form resembling a precious totem with
its exaggerated, elongated horn. This sculpture conveys the message that rhino horn
has become highly sought-after and valued by certain cultures, leading to the near
extinction of these creatures.
Jabu Nene has lovingly embellished Alex’s sculpture with detailed circular
motifs (known as “amasumpha” in isiZulu). The amasumpha is a circular design
that represents the egg or flower of life. These abstract symbols underline the
importance of protecting Africa’s surviving rhinos.
