Alex Sibanda’s armour-plated rhino sculptures include watchful eyes that emphasise
the need to safeguard rhinos from the international trade in their horns. Painters Jabu
Nene, her daughter Nozipho and cousin Slindy have added intricate Zulu patterns.
These designs were lovingly worked over the surface of each textured scale,
shell, feather and thorn. The sculptures remind us of ancient warriors protecting
themselves for a coming battle. Furthermore, the designs of this armour express
both futuristic and ancient associations.
