Thabiso Makhele has lovingly sculptured this impressive pangolin. Each scale has
been hand crafted and placed like armour upon the pangolin’s back. A labour of love
and one that illustrates the importance of each scale. Wiseman Ndlovu has chosen
to leave the pangolin’s sculptural form in the clay’s natural cream tones, emphasising
the essential nature of the pangolin’s scales. Wiseman preferred to add tortoiseshell
patterns on the inside of the pangolin’s tail, symbolising withdrawal and curling up
into a tight ball. This is the only form of protection the pangolin has against humans.
