Alex Sibanda’s big tusker with a family onboard represents migrants crossing borders
in heavily packed buses and illustrates the hardships that African people endure
in order to provide for their families. The parasol provides shade from the Limpopo
Valley’s intense heat as they continue their perilous journey.
Jabu Nene has painstakingly embellished the form with fine brushstrokes that create
intricate patterns and designs. She uses a sharp metal wire to scratch through the
paint creating fine lines in a technique known as sgraffito.
